Smith's work, which often manifests across various forms, is rooted in the imaginative potentials of the moving image. Drawing inspiration from third-world cinema, structuralist film, and science fiction, her immersive creations strive to envision an alternate future through speculative narratives, presenting a liberated and expanded worldview.

Her major solo exhibition, "Bronze Icebergs," unfolded at Kunstverein's Hazenstraat location in 2020. For this exhibition, Smith developed a new series of drawings, a film, and a flag specifically designed for the occasion. Among the forty-six drawings displayed at Kunstverein, Smith manipulated the official executive order, freshly signed by the then-US President (Trump), which condemned the destruction of monuments and called for the creation of a national garden featuring statues of 'Our American Heroes.' Smith amended the announcement by incorporating the names of notable Black female activists and cultural figures, as well as moments of insurgent uprisings that are often omitted from history. The current lot was part of the research conducted for this exhibition.

Smith's films, objects, and installations have been exhibited worldwide, including notable showcases such as the Whitney Biennial (2017), Prospect 4 in New Orleans (2017), and MASS MoCA. Her works are also part of public collections internationally, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
