‘Deze portretten zijn het resultaat van een persoonlijke zoektocht. Ik wilde onderzoeken wie die meisjes waren. Daarom ben ik naar een moskee en een islamitische meisjesschool gegaan en heb gevraagd of ik ze mocht fotograferen. Ik koos voor meisjes omdat zij geen keus hebben. Ze doen wat hun ouders zeggen. Maar het zijn allemaal individuen onder dat hoofddoekje. Allemaal unieke persoonlijkheden. Dat heb ik willen laten zien’ – Céline van Balen
