G.B. Jones is often hailed as the founder of queercore. An artist, filmmaker, musician, and publisher of zines, her work first gained notoriety within the underground scene of Toronto, collaborating with the likes of Bruce LaBruce. Jones' works began attracting international attention with the controversial publication of her Tom Girls series – a provocative collection of ballpoint pen drawings. In this series, Jones both formally and nominally appropriates Tom of Finland’s erotic oeuvre, substituting his hyper-masculine subjects with queer women. The drawings served as a platform for proudly empowered female sexuality but were considered too risqué by Canadian customs officers, who effectively suppressed the distribution of Jones' work through postal means.
Jones' inaugural solo exhibition in Europe debuted at Kunstverein in the spring of 2023, coinciding with the reprint of her previously censored collection of drawings titled “G.B. Jones.” The current lot was created in the aftermath of her visit to Amsterdam and was inspired by the candies she gathered from the city, with a wink to its queer history.
