Gabriel Lester (b. 1972) is an artist and (re) inventor. His work consists of sculptures, installations, performances andfilms. Other activities include commissioned design and art for public spaces and public buildings. Lester's creations stem from a desire to tell stories and create contexts and sets that support these stories or represent their own narrative interpretation. His vocabulary is characterised as cinematic, without necessarily using film or video as a medium. Like filmmaking, Lester's practice embraces every media and means imaginable. With an emphasis on human existence and the human experience of existence, Lester's projects are designed to broaden the mind. Open-ended, mysterious and without explicit messages or unambiguous ideas, Lester proposes forms for us to relate to the world, how it is represented, and what mechanisms and components shape our perception and understanding of it.
The proceeds of the Artists in Residence project are donated to the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds. The Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds aims to encourage inspiration, purpose, and social interconnection for everyone in the Netherlands by investing in cultural projects together with its partners. The Cultuurfonds supports and helps realize projects of cultural organizations and artists by raising funds and handing out awards for outstanding work.
