Hond en Maan (Dog and Moon)

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The painting is in a stable condition. The tension of the linen canvas is adequate without any distortions. The tacking margins are not visible but covered by a black tape. Some of the nails along the margins are noticeable in areas where the tape is slightly lifted or detached.
There are several holes along the extreme edges in sight size (for example along the upper edge) but they belong to the painting process and technique.
The blue base colour is very thinly applied, the structure of the canvas (heights) and the white ground layer emerge whereas the paint layer of the animal for example is not only opaque but executed in a different way with thick paint application, leaving a clear brush stroke.
The adhesion of the paint layer is good. Along the lower edge, a different shade of blue emerges, also distinguished in UV-light. It might be a retouching, covering a some how abraded area but is stays difficult to judge without microscopic inspection.
The surface shows some dust and locally there are minor small scratches. But again, the painting technique of Appel makes it difficult to distinguish between damage and original as part of the technique.
The painting is mounted in a tray frame, without a rebate.
