Lot Essay
“Chu Teh-Chun’s painting appears to me as a mental enigma, a theater where moving shadows act without revealing their secret: the image leads to a perpetual Elsewhere which remains both elusive and irrevocably present.” - Pierre Restany, ‘The Land of Chu’, in Chu Teh-Chun, Galerie Enrico Navarra, Paris, 2000, p.9.

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
It is in our opinion that the work is in overall good condition. The work was inspected inside the frame. Sides of the work cannot be checked due to framing status. The paint layer, paper and canvas are taut and in good condition. The colour is delicate. There are pinholes and marks of a pushpin on each corner, which are a vestige of the artist's studio practice. The below issues are only visible upon very close inspection. Minor accretion stripe on lower left. Pinpoint accretions dots scatter occasionally on paint surface. Hairline craquelures and cracks scatter very occasionally on impasto areas. Faint yellowed paint medium predominantly on upper left and impasto areas. Very slightly dusty surface. A previous paper tear which is now treated and mounted onto the canvas, measuring approx. 1.8 cm. near the lower edge, presumably originated from the artist’s studio. Light scratch traces associated with pinpoint paint loss on lower left. Minor aging of paint medium, resulting in spots of slightly darkened colour, predominantly on the middle and lower part. Minor and stable crushed impasto tips scatter . When examined under ultraviolet light, no apparent retouching shows.
