È un po' come quando descrivo in che modo lavoro il bronzo. A forza di romperlo, a forza di scalfirlo diventa una patina misteriosa, più bella e più naturale. […] Si diceva che Donatello mangiava il bronzo, addirittura. C'è proprio la gioia di rompere questa specie di superficie così dura e così tenuta, di cesellare e dare vita a delle forme che effettivamente, quando escono dalla fusione, possono essere morte; invece, riprendendole, le ravvivi, diventano un pezzo di bronzo che vive. Generalmente quando escono dalla fusione sembrano sempre delle cose ingolfate, mi sembra ci sia qualcosa che non mi appartiene più; allora le riagguanti, le rompi, prendi un martello, le spezzi, le tormenti e diventano vive, e più che le tocchi più sono vive.

It is a bit like when I describe how I work bronze. By dint of breaking it, by scratching it, it becomes a mysterious patina, more beautiful and more natural. […] It was said that Donatello even ate bronze. There is right the joy of breaking this kind of surface so hard and so held, of chiselling and giving life to shapes which, when coming out of the fusion, may be actually dead; instead, by taking them up again, you revive them, they become a living piece of bronze. Generally when they come out of the fusion they always seem to be bloated things, it seems to me there is something that no longer belongs to me; so you grasp them again, break them, take a hammer, crack them, torment them and they becomes alive, and the more you touch them the more they are alive.
