Lot Essay

Sanyu preferred exaggeration, extension, alteration and deformation. Sanyu also favored colors or rubbed charcoal along the inner contours of his bodies. From this planar or idealized gesture, it is apparent that Sanyu is not concerned with the technique of "representation." In contrast, Sanyu is more xie yi-freehand, impressionistic-and this aesthetic is closer to an aesthetic of abstract and natural, "between likeness and variance" in Chinese ink painting.
