This is a view looking north from the North Terrace of Windsor Castle. Eton College Chapel and school are visible on the other side of the river Thames. Paul Sandby painted a number of views looking east and west along the North Terrace (see J. Roberts, Views of Windsor – Watercolours by Thomas and Paul Sandby, 1995, nos. 16-18 and p. 66, figs. 17.2 and 17.3, Yale Center for British Art). Another version of this subject by Pyne was sold in these Rooms, 12th December 1972, lot 45, and bought by Agnew’s for 480 guineas.

A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.

The sheet is backed onto a supporting sheet of paper and hinged into non-acidic mount. There is some slight surface dirt to the extreme edges (overmonted). There has typically been some very slight fading to the more delicate pigments but the sheet reads well and could be hung without further attention.
