Lot Essay

John Martin's early work was very much associated with classical landscape conventions and influenced by Claude Lorrain - his first Royal Academy exhibit in 1811 was Landscape Composition. This drawing has been dated to circa 1814: whilst his early watercolours are in sepia and grey wash, the layered texture and use of colour here dates it to after 1812. The capriccio classical city was a motif he used until around 1820, shortly after his use of colour became much bolder and stronger. For the date, the use of colour here is very elaborate.
