John Martin's early work was very much associated with classical landscape conventions and influenced by Claude Lorrain - his first Royal Academy exhibit in 1811 was Landscape Composition. This drawing has been dated to circa 1814: whilst his early watercolours are in sepia and grey wash, the layered texture and use of colour here dates it to after 1812. The capriccio classical city was a motif he used until around 1820, shortly after his use of colour became much bolder and stronger. For the date, the use of colour here is very elaborate. We are grateful to Michael Campbell for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
