Lot Essay

Callow made his first trip to Italy in 1840, and Naples was his last stop on the tour. He was greatly affected by this trip, and his drawings developed stronger, bolder colour after it. Italy provided many of his most popular subjects throughout his career, and indeed he exhibited over a dozen views of Naples and its surroundings.
An engraving after Callow of this landscape, taken from a slightly different viewpoint, was made by R. Wallis and published in , 1856, p.16. The watercolour it was taken from was bought by Prince Albert in 1852.
