Lot Essay

Meinrad Guggenbichler was a Swiss-born sculptor who by 1670 was working in Upper Austria where he eventually settled in the town of Mondsee, a few miles east of Saltzburg. He received many commissions from churches and monasteries in the surrounding area, creating elaborate sculptural altarpieces in wood. The present pair are closely related to the sculptures of Saints Florian and George that Guggenbichler created to adorn the altar in the parish church of Lochen am See between 1709-1714.
