Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is executed on a copper plate, in an engaged frame which measures 44.5 x 38.5 x 2 cm. The plate remains stable and flat.
Examination in natural light reveals pin-prick losses along the upper edge of the painting, presumably as a result of frame abrasion. Further pin-prick losses are visible in the Virgin's blue cloak. There are minor losses in the Virgin's hand and Joseph's yellow drapery. An old discoloured varnish which carries some dirt is visible throughout the composition. Three white spots and a white vertical drip of circa 3cm are visible in the lower left hand corner. Examination under UV reveals scattered retouching and restoration in the upper-right hand corner.
