The painting is executed on wood panel, made up of two vertically-joined boards. The panel join is supported by five rectangular wooden keys. There is a vertical split in the right-hand panel, as seen from the reverse, which is further supported by five wooden keys. There are four pieces of foam attached to the panel edges to allow for secure framing. The panel has warped, resulting in a minor convex bow to the whole. There is a small panel loss to the lower right-hand corner, as seen from the reverse. The panel remains stable.
In natural light, retouching along the panel join and the split is visible. There is a thinning of the upper paint glazes, particularly visible in the brown, green and red tones. This has affected some of the details of the tree far-right, hair and flesh tones, as well as in the background where further retouching is visible along the panel grain. Examination under UV reveals further scattered retouching throughout the composition. The drama of the original composition retains its impact.
