The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting is executed on wood panel, made up of a single board, beveled around the edges. The panel is stable.
In natural light, the painting presents very nicely. The details of the staffage and the landscape appear very well preserved. There is some evidence of retouching in the sky upper-centre.
Examination under UV reveals two different campaigns of restoration. The first, associated with the aforementioned retouching in the sky, and some further retouching in the ice and snow to the left-hand side of the composition. The second, very minor scattered retouching to the upper-centre of the sky, lying along the wood grain. The paint is stable. The original intended atmosphere of the painting and its details remain fully appreciable.
