The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is executed on a copper plate, which remains flat and stable.
Examination in natural light reveals minor losses along the top and left edges, presumably as a result of frame abrasion. Two small scratches are present in the right arm of Saint Sebastian, the first near his wrist running diagonally circa 1.5 cm and the second in a zig-zag shape of circa 1 cm. Pin-prick losses are also present in the tree trunk far-right, ground lower right and branches of the tree upper centre and upper left. There is a fine pattern of craquelure in the tree trunk with some associated minor losses. There are more extensive losses in the Saint's red cloth draped over the tree branch with some historic infill. This would benefit from restoration. Retouching is visible in the upper right hand corner and flesh tones. Examination under UV confirms these observations and reveals further retouching in the sky, and the partial removal of old varnish, centre right. The colourful and powerful composition is still evident.
