"America exhibits a new Spectacle to the political world and is rising to Empire & Greatness in a manner so singular as to render her Steps interesting to all mankind..."

JAY, John (1745-1829). Autograph manuscript, [Madrid, c. 1780-1782].

Twelve pages on six leaves, 301 x 214mm with numerous corrections and emendations in ink and pencil. Docketed “Public affairs, Tho. Paine, &c 1779.”

- During his mission to obtain a treaty with Spain, John Jay drafts a summary on U.S. foreign affairs from independence to 1779 with "Truth and Impartiality," and for "Posterity."

- A highly important narrative, offering a high-level summary of the evolution of U.S. foreign policy as it sought an alliance with Spain—referencing the Silas Deane affair, the meddling of the "hackney writer," Thomas Paine, and the intrigues with French and Spanish diplomats.

- Once part of the collection of Jay's most significant biographer, not published in The Selected Papers of John Jay.

- One of the most significant John Jay manuscripts ever to appear at auction, and never before offered for public sale.
