Lot Essay

This work will be included in Betsy James Wyeth’s forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist’s work.

In Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, Andrew Wyeth enjoyed a twenty-year friendship with neighbors George and Helen Sipala. The Sipalas lived in the home that was once owned by illustrator Howard Pyle, mentor to the artist's father, Newell Convers Wyeth. The artist frequently painted the house as well as Helen and George, who modeled for works such as Marriage (1993, Private Collection) and the present example featuring Helen, a study for his large watercolor Beauty Rest (1991, Private Collection).
