Lot Essay

According to Rell G. Francis, the present version of On the War Path was cast by the Gorham foundry in an edition of 17 between 1917-47. A smaller 8 in. model was also cast by Gorham in an edition of 44.

The sculpture reveals the artist's empathetic perspective towards Native Americans. The Sioux warrior on horseback is presumably on his way to battle, yet his backward gaze suggests a reluctance toward the impending violence.
