The painting is in uneven condition, mainly because it has been rather amateurishly restored. The canvas has an old lining. The stretcher is original. In the sky, one can see a restoration above the left side of the large tree on the right and another above the right side of the same tree. There is also restoration in the sky in the center and upper left edge. While other restorations in the sky are not easily visible under ultraviolet light, it is possible that it was broadly interpreted at some point. There are isolated spots of retouching broadly applied throughout the dark color of the foreground, presumably to address small losses. There is a restoration in the roadway running across the center of the landscape addressing a small loss, and another broad area of restoration in the base of the mountain in the center distance. The hills in the mountains beyond are slightly more complex and may have older restorations added to cover up some thinness. The picture should become much clearer when it is carefully cleaned.
