The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This report was prepared by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.:
This work has been restored. The paint layer seems to be clean, and is noticeably un-abraded and not discolored. The canvas is lined with a non-wax adhesive. Under ultraviolet light, one can see that there are some retouches in the spine of the book second to the top in the stack on the left side, as well as in a spot or two in the lower books in this area. There are also some retouches on the right side of the newspaper hanging over the edge of the table. There may be a few others within the books to the right of the inkwell. Despite the slightly milky quality to the paint layer when viewed under ultraviolet light, the work is clearly in lovely state. There is no reason to adjust the restoration, and the work can be hung as is with a small amount of maintenance to the lower center.
