The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This condition report was prepared by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.:
This work has an old glue lining, which is still effectively supporting the paint layer, except for the extreme left edge, where small areas of instability have developed. The painting is more or less clean. Remnants of old varnish are visible under ultraviolet light around the edges. Retouches have been added in the lower center which seem to address some losses and possibly a break in the canvas. There is another restoration of about 1 inch long to a loss in the upper left. Small spots of abrasion have been retouched above the fire in the center of the left side. There are a few other isolated retouches in the lower left. For a work that has very complex and technical glazes, the condition is very good in general.
