Lot Essay

The present work is a sketch for a scene from Ludwig Bemelmans' Madeline in London, published in 1961. The story centers around a time when Madeline and her schoolmates visit their old neighbor, Pepito, in London for his birthday. When the girls give Pepito a horse as a birthday gift, they are at first dismayed to see that the horse has eaten almost everything in their neighbor's garden. As a result Ms. Clavel eases their minds, confirming "A Little Sunshine, A Little Rain, and it will all be the same again." (L. Bemelmans, Madeline in London, New York, 1961)
