The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This report was prepared by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.:
This work is in very good condition. It is on its original stretcher. However, the canvas has been lined onto board or possibly aluminum, which has in turn been backed with a sheet of linen applied with wax. It seems that this rather unattractive support can be easily removed. The canvas would probably have to be lined, given that there are some fairly strong cracks, particularly in the sky. The condition of the paint is beautiful and un-abraded. The paint layer is possibly dirty. There is one retouched loss in the center of the mainsail of the central boat.
