Lot Essay
The present drawing relates to a 1940 gouache titled West Indian Street, owned by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. The artist noted this sketch in his calendar, "Drew 1928 Paris Street on 15 x 22 size for gouache." The "Paris Street" refers to the present sketch and "15 x 22 size for gouache" refers to West Indian Street.

The paper is hinged with tape in two places along the reverse upper edge. Paper is slightly toned and the upper edge is uneven from its removal from the artist's sketchbook. A small tear along the left extreme edge and another along the right extreme edge. Fingerprints in upper right corner. Stain in lower right corner. Inscribed 'yellow/wood/grain' in the right margin.
