The present work, a rare view of the entrance to the Golden Gate, likely served as a preliminary study for Thomas Hill’s exhibition painting Picnic by the Sea (1873, Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, California).

The paper is laid down on a canvas, which is unlined. Frame abrasion to extreme edges. A few small paper losses in the lower left corner and along the upper extreme edge. Crease in upper left corner. Under ultraviolet light, spots of inpainting scattered around the extreme edges. Minor dashes scattered in the sky and a cluster in the rocks at lower right. A few minor dots and dashes scattered elsewhere.
