Walter Gay noted that the present work depicts, "[a] room in the Château du Bréau, Seine-et-Marne, France, the property of the artist. The bed and walls are covered with blue and white toile de Jouy. The furniture and mantlepiece are Louis XVI. The furniture and walls are painted cream colour." (as quoted in A.E. Gallatin, Walter Gay: Paintings of French Interiors, New York, 1920, n.p.)
