Lot Essay

The roots of the Punch and Judy marionette show date back to 1662 England. Usually brought to life by a single puppeteer, the outrageous dark comedy involved the husband and wife characters quarreling, mishandling their baby, and battling supernatural foes with jokes and songs sprinkled in between. An icon of English culture, modern versions of Punch and Judy are still performed today.
