The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This report was prepared by Simon Parkes Art Conservation Inc.:
The work has recently been carefully restored and should be hung in its current condition. The canvas has been lined with a non-wax adhesive. The surface is quite smooth and may be slightly lacking in texture, but the lining is reasonable nonetheless. The retouches are clearly visible under ultraviolet light, particularly in the lower sky. These address some slight thinness and unevenness to the subtle glazes. The upper sky on the right is unrestored and only a few retouches are visible in the upper left. The sailboats seem to be mostly undamaged, although the rigging of the largest boat may have been slightly strengthened. The water shows a few random spots of retouching, none of which are particularly concentrated. Although the work was overcleaned at some point, it looks well at present.
