Lot Essay

Guys Arthur Wiggins was the son of eminent American Impressionist, Guy Carleton Wiggins. Discussing the present work, the artist wrote: "The old Sub-Treasury Building provides a sheltered and, very importantly, an elevated location for a painter of this scene. So, I was able to stand there under the portico and paint all but the finishing touches from direct observation. I need to do that if I am to infuse life and movement into my work." (unpublished letter, circa 2001)
