Johann Berthelsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1883 before moving to the United States with his family in 1889. Initially studying and teaching music in Chicago, Berthelsen moved to New York in 1920 and eventually began to paint full-time. He is best known for his atmospheric Impressionist works depicting New York City, such as the present work.

The canvasboard is slightly bowed. Frame abrasion along the extreme edges, with two small paint losses below the signature at lower right. Minor scattered surface cracking. Under ultraviolet light, inpainting scattered along the extreme edges and a few dots scattered elsewhere. Discolored varnish.
