The present work depicts a view of the Pulitzer Fountain in Manhattan's Grand Army Plaza.

Johann Berthelsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1883 before moving to the United States with his family in 1889. Initially studying and teaching music in Chicago, Berthelsen moved to New York in 1920 and eventually began to paint full-time. He is best known for his atmospheric Impressionist works depicting New York City, such as the present work.
