The present work was likely painted on one of the artist's trips to Niagara Falls in the winter of 1893-94 and summer of 1894. A related painting, also titled Niagara Falls, is in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum, New York.

Lined. The tacking edges are covered with tape. Minor frame abrasion along the extreme edges. The surface is slightly dirty with scattered surface cracking and a few minor scattered surface abrasions in the upper register. Under ultraviolet light, inpainting scattered along the extreme edges and a few dashes, small spots and dots scattered elsewhere, most notably in the right register. Slightly discolored varnish.
