Lot Essay

Joseph DeCamp was born in 1858 in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he trained as an artist before travelling to Europe in 1878. He stayed abroad for five years, studying in Munich, Florence, and Venice. After returning to America, DeCamp settled in Boston in 1894. There he established himself as an eminent Impressionist—known for his plein air landscapes and striking portraits—and became a founding member of the Ten American Painters. His work is now in the collections of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., the Cincinnati Art Museum, Ohio, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and several other institutions.
