Robert Reid was born in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, in 1862 and studied at the Philips Academy from 1880-84. He subsequently spent three years in Paris studying at the Académie Julian before returning to the United States to teach at the Art Students League in New York. In 1897, he joined the Ten American Painters, developing his signature Impressionistic style. Known for his stunning landscapes, often including beautiful women—as in the present work—Reid's work can be found in numerous institutional collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.
