Lot Essay

The present work may depict the outer harbor of Gloucester, Massachusetts, a locale that the artist depicted on many occasions.

William Worcester Churchill was born in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, in 1858. He studied at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston before training under Léon Bonnat in Paris during the late 1870s. Churchill subsequently returned to Boston and established himself as an eminent painter, joining the Guild of Boston Artists, as well as the St. Botolph Club.
