HAMILTON, Alexander (1757-1804) Autograph letter signed ("AH") to Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton, [Albany.] 29 February [1804].

One page, bifolium, 181 x 190mm with authenticating endorsement in the hand of James Alexander HAMILTON (1788-1878) at top, and signed ("JAH"). Partial transmittal leaf addressed in his hand to "Mrs E Hamilton Pine Street 68 New York." (Light toning at lower margin, transmittal leaf soiled and trimmed.)

A tender note to his wife written as he was planning to leave Albany for his home in New York: "It was my intention my beloved Eliza to have left his City for New York this Morning. But having been slightly indisposed the day before yesterday& yesterday & as it is rainy this morning I have concluded to put off my departure till tomorrow; when please God I shall certainly begin my journey for my beloved Angels bosom — Keep all my sweet Children for me." 1 March came and went, and according to published letters in Hamilton's papers, he remained in Albany until at least 10 March and arrived home in New York sometime before 23 March (See Hamilton, Papers, 26:212-213 & 26:215). What delayed Hamilton in Albany? On 10 March 1804 Hamilton executed a deed conveying land in Cosby Manor to Rutger Bleeker that he had purchased in trust for them in 1797. (Hamiton, Papers, 26:213, fn2). However, his embroilment in squashing a rumor that during the Constitutional Convention he had floated the idea of installing an heir of George III as President of the United States. (See Chernow, 675-676; Hamilton, Papers, 26:208-209, 211-212.)
