拍品專文

This finely rendered panoramic view of Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbor captures the early colonial settlement at the base of its steep mountain backdrop, animated by a mix of foreign and Chinese shipping. Among the vessels at anchor flies the dark blue flag of the famous trading house Jardine Matheson, signaling the firm’s early dominance in regional commerce. On land, several landmark buildings are clearly identifiable, including the clock tower built in 1862, St. John’s Cathedral, and Government House (Patrick Conner, Paintings of the China Trade, The Sze Yuan Tang Collection of Historic Paintings (Hong Kong Maritime Museum, Hong Kong, 2013), p. 64). The calm water and orderly architecture reflect the precision and clarity favored in Chinese export paintings made for Western merchants. Both a documentary record and a work of aesthetic charm, the painting offers a vivid glimpse into Hong Kong’s flourishing harbor in the mid-19th century.
