ROOSEVELT, Franklin D. (1882-1945). Typed letter signed ("Franklin D. Roosevelt") as President to Robert S. Cain, Washington, 10 August 1936.
One page, 225 x 175mm., bifolium, on White House letterhead (mounting remnants on the verso, discoloration at top from prior tape, typical folds and light creases).
Regrettably unable to join the annual encampment of the United Spanish War Veterans, Roosevelt sends patriotic praise of the veterans to their Commander-in-Chief. "As Spanish War Veterans," he writes, "...you served your country with fidelity and valor in a time of national emergency, a service for which the Nation will ever hold you in grateful remembrance. The victories of peace are no less important than those of war and I need hardly remind you that in your capacity as citizens today you have opportunity for as patriotic and valuable service to your country as that which you gave as soldiers."
