First edition of the first of Douglass's three autobiographies, a cornerstone of abolitionist writing. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass was bravely published under Douglass's own name, only seven years after his escape from slavery. It told the story of his life from birth into slavery in Maryland to his escape and freedom. The success of the work placed Douglass in danger of capture; as a result, he spent the next two years of his life abroad, in England and Ireland, until his freedom was secured. Sabin 20711.
