Lot Essay

WASHINGTON, George. Address of the Late General George Washington, to the Citizens of the United States, on Declining Re-election to the Office of President. Hartford: Hudson and Goodwin, [1800].

Broadside, 460 x 570mm., on an untrimmed sheet of laid paper with deckled edges (folds with light browning along centerfold and at edges, minor splits at edges with loss at upper left, some tape repairs to verso). Matted and framed.

A fine broadside edition of Washington's famous farewell, being his address declining re-election as President for a third term—establishing a precedent only broken by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1940. Written with the assistance of Alexander Hamilton, Washington urges unity while warning against sectionalism and factions. An important foundational document of American political thought.
