Inscribed to a donor of the N.A.A.C.P Legal Defense Fund: "To Miss Charlotte Rosenbaum: In appreciation for your genuine humanitarian concern, and your great financial and moral support in the struggle to realize the American dream Martin Luther King, Jr." As referenced in the inscription, Charlotte Rosenbaum was a notable benefactor for numerous philanthropic causes, establishing funds for the support of mentally ill patients at numerous health clinics and donating to the A.C.L.U., the N.A.A.C.P. Legal Defense Fund, among others (Chicago Sun Times, Tuesday, June 25, 1974). The date "11-22-61" is inscribed in another hand, likely Rosenbaum's, in blue ink on the dedication page.
