An English edition of Chairman Mao's quotations owned by President Jimmy Carter, bearing his library stamp on the front flyleaf. One of Carter's most enduring legacies as President was establishing formal ties with China, where he continues to be beloved for his assistance in bringing the communist nation out of isolation in the 1970s in the midst of the Cold War. Carter was the first sitting President to welcome a leader of Communist China to Washington, inviting Deng Xiaoping to a state visit in January 1979.
