JEFFERSON, Thomas (1743-1826). Letter signed ("Th:Jefferson") as Secretary of State to an unidentified governor, New York, 9, July 1790.

One page, bifolium, 212 x 202mm (partial fold separations, a few small marginal chips, mounting remnants on verso). Docketed on verso in an unknown hand.

Thomas Jefferson transmits the first United States Census and other acts of the First Congress: "I have the honor to send You herein inclosed, two copies duly authenticated of the Act for giving effect to an Act intitled, 'An Act providing for the enumeration of the Inhabitants of the United States,' in respect to the State of Rhode Island and Providence plantations; also of the Act to authorize the purchase of a tract of land for the use of the United States ..." Jefferson was involved in the compilation of the 1790 census, as well as with the one compiled in 1800. The third Congressional Act referred to apparently concerns the decision to locate the seat of the Federal Government on the Potomac.
