JEFFERSON, Thomas (1743-1826). Partly printed document signed ("Th. Jefferson") as President, Washington, 17 April 1802.

One page on vellum, 470 x 360 mm, with two large patriotic vignettes of an eagle at top and military hardware at bottom, with affixed paper seal (typical folds and creases, dustsoiling, minor fold separation at right-edge). Countersigned by Henry DEARBORN (1751-1829) as Secretary of War. Framed with a portrait.

A retroactive commission of Samuel Welch as First Lieutenant in an artillery regiment as of 16 February 1801.

[With:] MADISON, James (1751-1836) Document signed ("James Madison") as President, Washington, 14 January 1813.

One page on vellum, 372 x 290mm., with scallop top and engraved calligraphic text ("By the President of the United States of America,") at top, two large vignettes of a three-masted sailing ship under full sail, and beneath, a scene of a lighthouse off the quay of a steepled city, with intact paper seal (typical creases, one small hole to lower vignette and light soiling at extremities, tape remnants to the verso). Countersigned by James MONROE (1758-1831) as Secretary of State.

A Mediterranean ship's passport issued to the Schooner Lottery of Baltimore.
