This is a copy after Claude Lorrain's painting, Landscape with the nymph Egeria mourning over Numa, dated 1669 and recorded in the Museo di Capodimonte, Naples (see M. Röthlisberger, Claude Lorrain: The Paintings, New York, 1979, pp. 409-413, no. LV 175). Claude draws from a story in Ovid's Metamorphoses and depicts the seated Egeria lamenting the death of her husband, Numa, while nymphs of the goddess Diana attempt to console her.

Inspection of the reverse of the canvas is prevented by a backing board presently adhered to the stretcher. The paint surface is stable under a clear varnish. The architecture has retained clear details and is nicely preserved. Minor scattered retouching to address the craquelure pattern, particularly in the center of the sky, has discolored over time. There is some abrasion to the foliage, particularly in the center and at upper right of the canvas. A small area of loss and associated retouching (now discolored) measures approximately 1 inch long in the foliage at extreme upper left, as seen in the catalogue image. There is retouching to the heads of the two standing figures and possibly the area surrounding their leashed dogs, whereas the two seated dogs and the seated figure of Diana appear to be well preserved. Inspection under ultraviolet light is hindered by a cloudy varnish, though there appears to be some restoration to the clouds at center. This painting may be hung in its present state. Please note the frame is sold as is.
