A CHINESE EXPORT PORCELAIN BLUE AND WHITE 'HATCHER CARGO' JAR AND COVER
The wares discovered in the early 1980s in the ‘Hatcher Cargo’, named after the Captain who made the discovery, now serve as important historical documents for the development and global trade in 17th-century Chinese porcelain. The cargo of the ship, which sank sometime in the years between 1643 and 1646, included some 25,000 pieces of porcelain, mostly blue and white wares from Jingdezhen, but also examples of celadon wares, Dehua wares, polychrome wares and provincial blue and white wares. Several thousand of these were sold in a historic sale at Christie’s, Amsterdam, in 1985.

Presenting well overall, with the typical minor intrinsic imperfections, in the making, including a few small dark kiln specks to the glaze and occasional small glaze gaps. Some scratches and wear throughout, consistent with age. The flaring edge of the cover and a few small chips around the rim of the body restored, the overpaint at the underside of the cover slightly yellowed; the knop reattached. Some adhesive residue to the cover and just below the rim of the body, from the cover previously being taped to the top.
