The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting presents very well overall. The painting on paper is laid down on canvas. The paint layer is clean under a clear varnish. There is a slight horizontal scratch of approximately 3/4 in. running through the handle of the urn at the right side, as visible in the catalogue image. The impasto has been nicely preserved in the whites of the clouds and in the urn. Areas of the ground are visible in the sky and background, though this is evidently due to these areas having originally been thinly painted, as intended by the artist. There are some minor, fine scratches in the sky visible in raking light. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals scattered strengthening strokes to the outline of the socle and possibly to the decoration of the rim of the urn, as well as the white strokes used to outline and highlight the relief at lower right. It also reveals an area of fluorescing restoration measuring approximately 1x1 in. in the center of the socle. The painting may be hung in its present state. Please note the frame is sold as is.
