The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The paper is laid down on a thin board which is slightly warped and which has in turn been affixed to another, thicker board (approximately 1/8 in.), but is now coming loose and is attached only by the upper edges. The paint layer is a little dirty. Abrasions, losses and small tears to the paper are visible along all four edges, but they are hidden by the frame. A diagonal crease to the paper running through the background is visible in raking light, extending from the upper edge through the background to the left of the figure, terminating just past the upturned chair. Strengthening to the sitter's shadow, his attire, and the overturned stool and circular stone at left, is visible in raking light. Inspection under ultraviolet light is hindered by a cloudy varnish. The painting may be hung in its present state. Please note the frame is sold as is.
